70 REASONS NOT TO BE AN ENTREPRENEURÂ
This book grew from many conversations between the author and entrepreneurs over the past two decades. Often, the conversations were lighthearted, and along the lines of wondering why anyone would choose the torture of creating one’s own business as a path in life.
The entrepreneurial life is a curious one in current literature. Sometimes glorified, sometimes vilified, and sometimes disdained, we view creators of businesses through many lenses. Nevertheless, peruse any library or bookstore and you’ll find shelf upon shelf of tomes proclaiming the glories of entrepreneurs.
Some are along the lines of step-by-step programs, others public policy arguments as to why creation of businesses are important for a growing economy, and a few purportedly help the reader choose which business she might start.
We occasionally hear political discourse about the need to support small business in America. Regardless of which side of the political aisle you find yourself -- and admittedly the size of that aisle is cavernous these days -- we find a common definition of “small business.” The small business of which Washington DC speaks is one with 12 full-time employees and $5 million a year in annual sales.
Now, many entrepreneurs want to get to that point. But the author believes the truth of the matter is that the vast majority of small businesses in America support one person, the owner; the average small business delights its owner when it crosses into six figures of revenues. With the uncertainties in job markets, diminished loyalty to companies by employees and by companies to their workers, and the real fear that many have of ever attaining or maintaining the American dream of a middle-class lifestyle, increasing numbers of us will turn to creating our own business as the answer.
Too many of us are frustrated with the current job situation. Even if we have a steady job, too many of us are frustrated with what we do for 40 to 60 hours per week.
Finally, there is and always has been an undercurrent of an independent streak that runs through our country’s psyche. Perhaps the answer to all this is an increased focus on entrepreneurship. What’s the purpose to this collection? The intent is not to discourage or dissuade someone who wants to start a business. Rather, it is to set forth a level of realism, by listing out many reasons why being in business is not the sweet deal that it may seem to be. The dream must be tempered by the reality. What this book will do for you, in a sometimes lighthearted and hopefully amusing style, is get you to think before leaping onto the path of entrepreneurship.

But I believe the truth of the matter is that the vast majority of small businesses in America support one person, the owner; the average small business delights its owner when it crosses into six figures of revenues. Discussions about business in America usually revolve around publicly traded companies, multinational corporations, and firms whose every move is scrutinized heavily in the 24-hour news cycle of cable TV business networks. These same organizations also report on employment statistics in our country, and unemployment rates, and discuss whether certain actions by institutions such as federal, state or local governments are “job creators” or “job killers”. Over the past few decades, however, the overall net effect of job creation has occurred in the small business realm. Some of the larger companies grow and some contract with respect to employment, but the net effect has been essentially zero job growth in big business.
